Thoughts on Reading Glass Costs
Many of our customers and friends have wondered why 4readers.com is able to sell the same reading glasses found in stores for 3 to 4 times the cost. We have some thoughts on this question.
1) Many reading glass merchants sold reading glasses before the Internet became a major shopping venue. These merchants then decided to sell their reading glasses on the Internet. They maintained their "brick and mortar" costs such as rent, sales expenses, property taxes, and all of the other traditional expenses associated with selling out of stores. At 4readers.com, we are strictly an electronic company (e-tailer). We do not have all of the traditional expenses that other suppliers have. We can therefore offer the same glasses at substantial discounts.
2) Reading glasses are a necessity, not a frivolous amenity. People need them to read. It is possible that over the years, a few merchants have taken this fact and capitalized on it by charging more than a fair market value price. However, we believe most merchants are honest, reputable and ethical people.
3) As we have grown exponentially over the years, we have been afforded special pricing by the manufacturers. In 2004 we sold over 50,000 pair of glasses, and will far surpass that in 2005. Buying in quantity allows us to pass substantial savings to our customers.
4) We don't believe in gimmicks. As baby boomers, we should know by now that nothing is "free". Free shipping isn't free if the product is overpriced. Free replacements aren't free if the cost to ship each "free" item is more than the original cost. Another gimmick is the use of the word "only" or "just". If something is "only" $19.99 or "just" $19.99, it is still $19.99. Keep in mind that "for profit" companies are in business to make money, in addition to providing a product and/or service. If you see the word "free" or "only", take a good luck at the bottom line. You should be able to find the gimmick. If you have a problem finding it, just email us and we'll be happy to help you.
