Akinetopsia is an extremely rare condition that renders its sufferers unable to perceive motion in their visual field, rendering the world essentially motionless within their sight. Most of the literature and research on akinetopsia revolves around the study of one patient, commonly referred to as “L.M.” She reported, for example, being unable to pour tea correctly for her guests, because she couldn’t discern the movement of the liquid-it appeared frozen in space. She also had difficulty perceiving the conversations of others, as she was unable to detect lip movements or gestures. The cause of this condition is speculated to be a result of possible brain lesions, as it is also reported among Alzheimer’s Disease patients. There is currently no cure or treatment.
